I painted this and A Little Lunch on the same day. With some friends, I set up at the Manassas train depot, thinking I wanted to paint a scene of the tracks; but after poking at it awhile I gave it up -- I couldn't think of any way to make the scene interesting. So I started on the Lunch painting instead.

Suddenly a train came along, and I scurried over to my first set up, hoping to slap in a quick impression of the train -- when lo and behold, the train pulled to a halt, in exactly the right spot. It stayed there long enough for me to get a good solid rendering of it, fiddly bits and all. Then it gathered steam and chugged away, and I plonked in the rest of the scene.

This painting was awarded second place.
