Watercolor Demo
Belcanto Tulip
I do a lot of these small "flower portraits" with dark, blue/green backgrounds. This is an approach I picked up from Virginia artist Joe Phillips. I use it a little differently than Joe, but it's been pretty successful for me so far. I don't know why I make so many of the images square! -- they just seem to work better that way.

As always, I begin first with references and a thumbnail sketch. I usually work either from life or from my own photos, but in this case I wanted a more unusual looking bloom than my long-suffering garden was able to provide, so I also raided a few bulb catalogs for ideas. Here's some of the reference photos . . .

. . . and here's the "thumbnail," which was sketched in the margin of my watercolor paper. Usually I do more than one of these quick drawings as I try to work out several compositional ideas, but this time I had a pretty clear notion of what I wanted the finished painting to look like, so I just used the thumbnail to help me remember the placement of the two tulips and their leaves.
