All of these, with the exception of the "Aladdin" quote, were done by beginning students, in the 3rd or 4th week of their calligraphy class. The lettering style is called "Bookhand," which I like for beginners because it is rather basic yet at the same time lends itself to decorative motifs.

The assignment is to take a quote they like and design a page of calligraphy. Unfortunately I didn't do a good job of recording the student's name for each piece, but I've listed them where I could.

Apple Blossoms
Artist: Carol Crossman. What I liked about this piece was the way the simple decorative elements captured the idea of fluttering apple blossoms.

Happiness
An ambitious but well-executed border design sets this piece apart. We had some discussions about that odd capital "H", though! The rest of the letters are very good examples of the Bookhand style.

Loaves & Fishes
The artist used pointed ends on her serifs, not the usual rounded ends. She was consistent, though, and so got away with it. The simple fish design fit perfectly with both her quote and her distinctive letters.

  It Takes a Village
Artist: Sheila ____. This was the first time I had ever seen this by now well-known quote. Sheila took some liberties with the letter forms for decorative purposes.

From a Sundial
Artist: Richard Shaw. For this class with a group of seniors I decided to use calligraphy markers instead of dip pens, thus the brown ink. You'll also find one of Dick's watercolors in the Open Studio gallery.

From Aladdin
From an "advanced" calligraphy class. The letters here are Legende Freehand, an Arabic-influenced style which made the artist think of this opening line from an "Aladdin" picture book. I also liked her vaguely Arabic border motif.
